WWE Backlash 2017

When is WWE Backlash 2017?

WWE Backlash 2017 is being broadcast live from the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois on Sunday, May 21. It gets underway from 8pm local time and from 1am in the UK (Monday morning).

What is the main event?

WWE Champion Randy Orton will put his title on the line against Jinder Mahal, a man who has risen from relative obscurity to earn a shot at the gold.

Mahal stole Randy's title belt last month, then hit Orton with it to help Bray Wyatt defeat him in a bizarre House of Horrors match at the Raw pay-per-view Payback.

Calling on the support of his henchmen The Singh Brothers (Sunil and Samir Singh), could the musclebound challenger pull off an almighty upset?

What about the women's title?

SmackDown's Women's Championship will not be defended this time around, but the champion Naomi will be in action in a six-woman tag team match.

She has teamed with SmackDown newcomer Charlotte Flair and fan favourite Becky Lynch against nefarious trio The Welcoming Committee.

Natalya, Carmella and Tamina have been making life hell for Naomi and co, especially with Carmella's boyfriend James Ellsworth meddling in Becky's business.

What are the other key matches on the card?

The big one is plain to call - it's the main roster in-ring debut of the former NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura versus former world champion Dolph Ziggler.

The Japanese megastar is like no other performer on the planet - an extraordinary showman with tremendous wrestling ability - while Dolph should be the perfect foil.

Another mouthwatering clash is the battle between United States Champion Kevin Owens - Raw's MVP in 2016 - and the man who built SmackDown Live, AJ Styles.

Two former 'brothers' collide when Luke Harper, one of the most talented big men in the company, faces his ex-stablemate in the Wyatt Family, Erick Rowan.

The underdog from the underground Sami Zayn, who rarely fails to deliver in the ring, tries to survive the physical test provided by the bruising Baron Corbin.

WWE Backlash 2017 Predictions

Q: What can be done to salvage Erick Rowan or Luke Harper's character after being booked so poorly for so long?

Kevin Berge (KB): Erick Rowan's rebuilding has already begun based on his recent promo on Talking Smack. He seems to be taking on different characters based on what sheep mask he wears, including a fascinating play on It with a clown sheep mask. This should make him more interesting. Harper is already over and just needs to be used more as he is one of the best big men in the business.

Prediction: Harper wins clean to even the series.

Anthony Mango (AM): All it will take is for WWE to put the slightest bit of effort into maintaining this feud and giving it some of the spotlight. Nobody can care about a feud if it's clear WWE's creative team doesn't feel it has the slightest bit of importance. Both are talented, and there's certainly potential for storyline purposes, so to salvage the feud, all that needs to happen is to make sure it doesn't fall by the wayside.

Prediction: Either man could win, and it won't make much of a difference. Let's just go with Rowan after a coin flip.

Erik Beaston (EB): Both are so incredibly one-dimensional and uninteresting. Harper lacks character while Rowan at least has a cool look going for him, especially with the clown-themed sheep mask. At this point, the best thing to do is put them back together so they can tear through the tag team division. After all, a singles run does not appear to be something that is going to work for either man.

Prediction: Luke Harper.

Ryan Dilbert (RD): Establishing a character outside of The Wyatt Family mythos and committing to either man. Some steady spotlight and direction. As we've seen Breezango, things can turn around for a bottom-of-the-barrel act in a hurry with some effort.

Prediction: Rowan wins as part of a mini push.

Chris Mueller (CM): Both men have great potential to be valuable midcard talents, at the least. But it will take some work. Harper is already known as a versatile performer, but Rowan needs something to make him stand out. Booking him as more of a psychopath would help distinguish him from the methodical Bray Wyatt.

Prediction: Harper wins to extend the feud.

Q: Has moving to SmackDown done anything to help Sami Zayn's struggling main roster career? Why or why not?

KB: It is too early to tell. While it is a bit of an overstatement to say Zayn is struggling given his constant use, he has been losing quite a bit, and that has continued on SmackDown. Still, that is an aspect of his character, being the top underdog in WWE. The odds of Zayn getting a shot at a world championship soon are far better on SmackDown, so this move should aid him long term.

Prediction: Zayn manages to take the win after a tough battle against Corbin.

AM: In these past few weeks, Zayn has stayed in the same position he found himself on Raw, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Over time, SmackDown will be a much better home for him, as he stands out as one of the top upper-midcard wrestlers on the brand. Once a firm hierarchy is put in place, Zayn will be one of the front-runners for the United States Championship and even a decent contender for the WWE Championship—WWE has just been too focused cleaning up the mess of the Superstar Shake-up to get to that point.

Prediction: Baron Corbin is the bigger fish, so he'll get the win unless Zayn can pop off a random roll-up.

EB: It has not. Sami Zayn is an interesting case in that he is a brilliant in-ring performer but comes across as such a geek in every other facet that it is hard to get behind him. A lot of that can be blamed on the way he is booked. One minute he is begging authority figures for a chance. The next he gets beaten in a big pay-per-view match—or attacked during a backstage segment. He talks a big game but never wins, and with that comes the loss of credibility and fans' faith.

Prediction: Baron Corbin.

RD: Not yet. He's closer to the title picture in theory, as he's been in some multiple-wrestler No. 1 Contender matches, but he hasn't been presented as a viable challenger. He still has zero wins on the blue brand since his move from Raw. And it looks as if he's set to be the sacrificial lamb to Corbin.

Prediction:  Corbin wins a show-stealer.

CM: No, but Sunday's result could change all that. If Zayn gets the win, it will be a big step in the right direction. It feels like WWE knows how good he is but is waiting until the right time to put him into the main event scene.

Prediction: Zayn wins a competitive bout.

WWE Championship Match: Randy Orton (c) vs. Jinder Mahal

Woooow. I did not expect Jinder Mahal to win that No. 1 Contender's match, did you? Despite that, I'm actually cool with this. Why not do something different and give a guy a push that hasn't had one before? Mahal has one of the best looks of the whole roster at the moment and the worst case scenario here is that they have a shitty feud for a few weeks. Then, he can go back to being a midcarder. Best case scenario, Mahal is taken seriously from now on. No matter what, we know Orton isn't dropping the title to him......right?

PREDICTION: Randy Orton retains.

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match: The Usos (c) vs. Breezango

I think Tyler Breeze and Fandango are very underrated and underutilized, so for them to get a title shot on a pay-per-view that doesn't involve other tag teams or anything that pulls the rug out from underneath them is a good thing. That being said, I don't have any faith that they'll dethrone The Usos. That's for The New Day to do.

PREDICTION: The Usos might not be champions for too much longer, but they're not losing the belts at Backlash.

United States Championship Match: Kevin Owens (c) vs. AJ Styles

My gut tells me Kevin Owens will retain, as they have this "new face of America" moniker that should last a little longer. However, I don't have a solid prediction of who I think will dethrone him when the time comes. Sami Zayn seems like a decent fallback and Shinsuke Nakamura is a very good option so they can give him a title without putting the WWE Championship on him, but I also sort of feel like Baron Corbin may get a run with the belt. If that happens, Styles should beat Owens and then lose it to Corbin. Ah, screw it, let's go with Owens retaining and when he's done with his feud against Styles, Nakamura wins the belt from KO.

PREDICTION: Kevin Owens retains.

Six-Woman Tag Team Match: Naomi, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch vs. The Welcoming Committee

Well I guess that Charlotte face turn is becoming more and more solidified, isn't it? This seems more like a SmackDown television show main event rather than something that should happen at Backlash, but it all depends on WWE's plan for the future. With the Superstar Shake-Up, I never anticipated we'd get Charlotte turning face and Natalya forming a stable with Tamina and Carmella, so my whole idea of Charlotte winning the title from Naomi right off the bat appears to be null and void. It could still happen, but at the very least, I'm interested in how there's a possibility we get something different for the next few months.

PREDICTION: Charlotte will probably get the win for her team.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

This could be really, really good. I don't want to get my hopes up that it will be a Match of the Year contender, but it definitely has the potential.

PREDICTION: Shinsuke Nakamura wins.

Pre-Show Kickoff Match: Tye Dillinger vs. Aiden English

The Perfect 10 damn sure better not lose to someone who currently has a gimmick of "crybaby loser" am I right?

PREDICTION: Tye Dillinger wins.

Baron Corbin vs. Sami Zayn

I'm glad to see both of these guys found their way on the card. They're going to be big players for the future of the SmackDown brand and it made perfect sense for the two to face off, considering their interactions as of late. It should be no surprise if this match is booked in a way where Corbin dominates, Zayn puts up a good fight, but ultimately comes up short to the big guy, but while that's predictable, it doesn't mean it's the wrong decision of how this should go down.

PREDICTION: Baron Corbin wins.

Luke Harper vs. Erick Rowan

Speaking of being happy to see two guys on the card, the same is applicable to Erick Rowan and Luke Harper, for sure. I was really hoping to see a little more attention put on the former Wyatt Family members and even though I think it will probably not be given too much time on the show, it's great that they're at least getting the opportunity to go out there and have the audience check them out. This should go a long way into allowing them to be contenders for the Money in the Bank ladder match at the next event.
